What We Do and Why It Matters
Passive Fire Protection
Protecting the Fabric of your Building from Fire
FIRAS and BM Trada approved contractor
Shepway Fire Protection specializes in the restoration of a buildings fire compartment as set out in the original or revised fire strategy to ensure the facility is safe for its inhabitants and compliant with building regulations. We are FIRAS and BM TRADA accredited and can certify passive fire protection works including penetration sealing, fire doors and drylining systems for walls and ceilings. This covers the majority of remedial works required to restore a building’s structural fire protection that ensures safe occupation for its inhabitants.
As buildings age, they more often than not undergo changes to their layout and/or infrastructure to accommodate changes in occupants and different ways of working. This is often brought about by advances in technology which leads to the modification of the core services so that the work space meets the ever changing needs of the occupants and workplace regulations. Examples include fitting low energy lighting, upgrading fire and smoke alarms, installing or upgrading access control systems, improving communications systems etc.
More often than not when carrying out these upgrade works, the original fire strategy is compromised. If this is the case it is likely that the conditions that underpin the building insurance may be impacted and could render the policy invalid. The remedial action required to ensure the asset is insurable is a documented and certified restoration of the fire compartments to meet the original or updated fire strategy for the building. The majority of insurers specify FIRAS and BM Trada certified installers to undertake the remedial works. Shepway Fire Protection has a team of 10 qualified installers and supervisors working in Kent and the surrounding areas.
What is Passive Fire Protection?
Passive fire protection encompasses a range of structural and architectural measures designed to contain and slow the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases within a building. Unlike active fire protection systems that require manual or automatic activation, passive fire protection features are inherently built into the building’s design and construction, with their primary goal to limit the extent of fire damage and provide occupants with more time to evacuate safely in the event of a fire.
